All discovered items are the property of the property owner. It is important to note that valuable finds are exceedingly rare, so it’s best to manage expectations accordingly. Regardless of their value, we make it a point to show property owners everything that is found, even if it’s considered to be of little worth. If we uncover family heirlooms belonging to previous property owners, such as engraved jewelry, silver, or military tags, we may suggest the possibility of returning them to their respective families.
It has happened that people offer up a reward, this normally goes into gas, lunch, new equipment, or some adult beverage. It is not necessary or expected. Ultimately, the decision rests with you the property owner.
We will document certain historical discoveries to share with the local historical society, but only with the approval of the property owner. On occasions, property owners may insist that we keep the finds, but once again, this is entirely at their discretion and never an assumption. We come in with empty pockets and expect to leave the same way.
